Alvarado Awarded for Excellence in Patient Safety!
Alvarado Hospital Medical Center has been recognized by two national quality ratings organizations for excellence in patient safety. The Leapfrog Group's Spring 2019 awards, announced earlier this month, handed Alvarado Hospital an ‘A' Hospital Safety Grade . The hospital is also a recipient of the Healthgrades 2019 Patient Safety Excellence Award™. Leapfrog's ‘A' rating is in recognition of Alvarado Hospital's superior efforts and results in providing safe care for its patients. Similarly, the Healthgrades award places Alvarado among the top 5% of all short-term acute care hospitals reporting patient safety data as evaluated by Healthgrades. This marks the fifth consecutive year that Healthgrades has awarded Alvarado Hospital this distinction (2015-2019).
“Patient safety is our mantra,” explains Robin Gomez, CEO of Alvarado Hospital. “There are some things that we cannot control in our industry, so we concentrate on things we can, like the quality of care we deliver, and the well-being of the patients we take care of. I'm gratified to see, once again, that our efforts are being lauded by such distinguished organizations such as The Leapfrog Group and Healthgrades. I'm so proud of our hospital!”
Alvarado Hospital's new, 32-bed emergency department (ED) is a designated full-service emergency department for the San Diego County Emergency Medical System open 24/7. Staffed with board-certified emergency medicine physicians and experienced registered nurses, the Alvarado Hospital ED provides immediate access to the most advanced diagnostic services and lifesaving care.
Alvarado Hospital's ED provides advanced care 24 hours a day, seven days a week with several notable designations:
- Severe heart attack (STEMI) receiving center: Participant in the American Heart Association Get with the Guidelines program for acute coronary syndrome and heart failure
- Designated an Advanced Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission
- Top 5% in the nation for Clinical Excellence and Patient Safety (Healthgrades)
Additionally, the Alvarado Hospital ED is supported by an on-call panel of physicians from every hospital medical and surgical subspecialty. Many of these physicians are nationally and internationally recognized for their expertise.
Certified Heart Attack "STEMI Center”
As a San Diego County-designated severe heart attack (STEMI) receiving center, Alvarado Hospital emergency physicians and nurses coordinate with emergency response personnel to begin life-saving cardiac care before the patient even gets here.
This special designation is only given to hospitals that have proven their staff can meet stringent standards for cardiac care. Working seamlessly together, the Alvarado Hospital emergency and cardiac catheterization (cath) lab teams ensure patients receive an interventional procedure, such as balloon angioplasty, within 90 minutes or less of arriving at the emergency department. This time frame achieves the best outcomes for heart attack patients. Alvarado Hospital's average door-to-ballon time is 64 minutes.
Certified Primary Stroke Center
Alvarado Hospital has been designated an Advanced Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission, the largest accreditation organization of hospitals in the nation. The award recognizes Alvarado Hospital's commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment for at least 24 months according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations. Stroke patients arriving at Alvarado Hospital are seen within 20 minutes by a board-certified neurologist. The ED is equipped with a state-of-the-art neuro camera that allows physicians to immediately evaluate the stroke patient and expedite treatment.
Certified for Geriatric Emergency Care
The Alvarado Hospital Emergency Department is also accredited by the American College of Emergency Physicians as a level three geriatric emergency department (GEDA).This means that the nurses, physicians, and staff adhere to industry best-practices in the care of senior patients, and the facility itself is stocked with geriatric-appropriate equipment and supplies.
